Matthew Rhys: From Cardiff all the way to Emmy History
FROM Welsh-language schools in Cardiff to one of the most remarkable nights in Emmy history, Matthew Rhys has built an international acting career without ever losing sight of where it began.
Known to millions for starring roles in The Americans, Brothers & Sisters and Perry Mason, Rhys has become one of Wales’ most successful contemporary actors – equally comfortable playing an American lawyer, a Soviet spy, a troubled journalist or the mayor of a distinctly strange New England island.
And throughout it all, Wales – and the Welsh language – have remained close to the heart of his story.

Growing up in the Welsh capital
Matthew Rhys was born in Cardiff on 8 November 1974 and grew up in a Welsh-speaking household.
He was educated through the medium of Welsh at Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Melin Gruffydd and Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf, schools whose influence he has continued to acknowledge long after establishing himself in Hollywood.
Acting began to take hold during his teenage years. After appearing as Elvis Presley in a school production, Rhys applied to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London. He graduated in 1996 and soon began establishing himself on stage and screen.
His early work included the Welsh-language film Bydd yn Wrol, which brought him a BAFTA Cymru acting award, and the Welsh drama House of America.

Wales, Hollywood and Brothers & Sisters
The move that significantly raised Rhys’s international profile came in 2006, when he was cast as lawyer Kevin Walker in the American television drama Brothers & Sisters.
Rhys moved to California for the role and remained with the series throughout its five-season run until 2011.
Yet even as his American career developed, Welsh stories continued to feature in his work. He portrayed Dylan Thomas in the 2008 film The Edge of Love and later appeared in the Welsh-Argentine film Patagonia, reflecting another of Wales’ remarkable international connections.

The Americans changes everything dramatically
In 2013 came the role that transformed Rhys from a familiar television actor into one of the most acclaimed performers working in American drama.
In The Americans, he played Philip Jennings, one half of a married couple apparently living an ordinary suburban life near Washington DC during the Cold War.
In reality, Philip and his wife Elizabeth – played by Keri Russell – were Soviet KGB agents operating undercover in the United States.
The series ran for six seasons from 2013 to 2018 and brought Rhys three consecutive Emmy nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. In 2018, for the show’s final season, he won.
It was the first chapter in an extraordinary Emmy story.

Becoming the new Perry Mason
Rhys subsequently took on another famous American character when he starred in HBO’s reimagining of Perry Mason.
Rather than reproducing the polished courtroom lawyer familiar from the classic Raymond Burr television series, the new production introduced audiences to a more troubled and unconventional version of Mason. The performance brought Rhys another Emmy nomination in 2021.
His film work has been similarly varied, including appearances in Steven Spielberg’s The Post and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, in which he starred alongside Tom Hanks.

A Welshman in America
Perhaps one of the most remarkable aspects of Rhys’s career is how convincingly this Cardiff-born Welsh speaker has inhabited so many American characters.
But away from the screen, he has remained strongly connected to his Welsh identity.
Welsh was the language of his childhood home, and Rhys has spoken about attempting to pass the language on to his own children while living in the United States.
That connection to Wales was demonstrated very publicly in September 2026.

Emmy history in 2026
At the 78th Emmy Awards on 14 September 2026, Rhys achieved something no actor had previously managed.
He won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for his performance as Nile Jarvis opposite Claire Danes in Netflix psychological thriller The Beast in Me.
Later the same evening, he won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his portrayal of Mayor Tom Loftis in Apple TV’s supernatural comedy Widow’s Bay.
The Television Academy confirmed that Rhys had become the first actor to win two lead acting Emmys in the same year. Combined with his 2018 victory for The Americans, the achievement also made him the first performer to have won lead acting Emmys across drama, comedy and limited-series categories.
Widow’s Bay also won Outstanding Comedy Series. As one of its executive producers, Rhys shared in that award, taking his career Emmy total to four.
But amid the Hollywood celebrations, Cardiff was never very far away.
Accepting his second acting award, Rhys thanked his family and paid tribute to “the great and good people of Wales”, describing the country that raised him as a “small but mighty nation.” He finished in Welsh.
For an actor whose journey began in Welsh-language classrooms in Cardiff, it was an appropriately Welsh ending to an extraordinary night.

Still proudly Welsh
Matthew Rhys has spent much of his professional life portraying people from somewhere else.
Americans. Russians pretending to be Americans. Lawyers. Journalists. Businessmen. Detectives.
Yet behind those accents and characters has remained a distinctly Welsh performer whose language, education and upbringing continue to form an important part of his identity.
From Glantaf to Hollywood, Matthew Rhys has travelled an extraordinary distance.

Matthew Rhys and fellow Welsh actor Ioan Gruffudd attended the same Welsh-language schools in Cardiff. Rhys has said that seeing Gruffudd head to RADA helped show him that acting could genuinely become a career. The pair later shared a home in London for years – and sometimes used Welsh as their own private language.
