THE Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama is Wales’ national conservatoire and one of the UK’s most distinctive training grounds for performers, makers and arts professionals. Based in Cardiff, the College brings together a tight-knit community of talented actors, musicians, designers, stage managers, technicians and arts managers from more than 40 countries.

Where it is and what it’s like

RWCMD sits in the castle grounds at Cathays Park, overlooking the green sweep of Bute Park and just a short stroll from Cardiff’s city centre – so you get peaceful rehearsal spaces and instant access to a lively capital on your doorstep. The campus doubles as a professional arts hub, with public performances year-round.

Stages, halls and creative spaces

Training is embedded in real performance. Students work across an impressive suite of venues, including the purpose-built Dora Stoutzker Hall (the College’s flagship chamber recital hall), the Richard Burton Theatre (a 180-seat horseshoe auditorium), the Bute Theatre and the Caird Studio. The characterful Anthony Hopkins Centre – set in the former Cardiff Castle stables – houses studios, practice rooms and a recording space.

What you can study

The College offers specialist courses spanning Music (including classical performance, composition and opera), Acting and Musical Theatre, Design for Performance, Stage Management and Technical Theatre, plus Arts Management. The aim is simple: conservatoire-level coaching, generous one-to-one tuition and intensive project work that readies you for sustainable careers in the creative industries.

Industry connections and professional focus

RWCMD is part of Conservatoires UK and the European Association of Conservatoires, and its drama training is aligned with the Federation of Drama Schools – useful markers for both the depth of tuition and the professional doors that open while you study. The College is also in the University of South Wales Group, which validates its degrees. Guest artists, directors and designers work with students across productions and projects throughout the year.

Leadership, patrons and profile

The College’s Principal is Professor Helena Gaunt, a musician and sector leader in conservatoire education. The Patron is HM King Charles III, and in 2024 Dame Shirley Bassey was named College President – reflecting RWCMD’s visibility at the heart of Welsh cultural life.

Life in Cardiff

Choosing RWCMD means living in a compact, friendly capital with a heavyweight arts scene. Between the College’s own stages, Cardiff’s major venues, and national companies visiting the city, students are surrounded by performance – often just a few minutes’ walk from rehearsal rooms. With parkland next door and the Bay a short hop away, day-to-day life balances focus with plenty of breathing space.

How to apply

Applications are made through UCAS or UCAS Conservatoires depending on the course, with auditions or interviews central to selection. For most music routes – and many performance pathways – you’ll apply via UCAS Conservatoires; the College’s course pages explain the route and timelines in detail.

Why RWCMD?
  • Performance at the core: You won’t just train for the stage – you’ll live on it, with frequent public shows that simulate professional conditions.
  • Outstanding facilities: From the intimate acoustics of the Dora Stoutzker Hall to the professional scale of the Richard Burton Theatre, spaces are designed to sharpen craft and confidence.
  • Serious industry links: Memberships and partnerships keep curricula aligned with the sector and bring in working practitioners to mentor student companies and ensembles.
  • A capital-city campus you can cross on foot: Rehearse beside parkland, step out to the city centre, and plug into one of the UK’s most accessible arts ecosystems.

Whether you’re aiming for orchestral pits or opera stages, design studios or production departments, repertory companies or the screen, RWCMD offers a conservatoire experience rooted in Wales and outward-looking by design. For many, the attraction is the blend: world-class coaching, constant stage time, and a city where the arts feel close enough to touch.
