Taron Egerton

Actor Taron Egerton, brought up in Wales, catapulted to global fame in the breakout role of Gary “Eggsy” Unwin, a street-smart young man from south London recruited into a secret spy organisation, in the 2014 big-screen release Kingsman: The Secret Service

TARON EGERTON is one of the most compelling and versatile actors of his generation, whose rise to international stardom has been firmly grounded in the values, culture, and pride of his Welsh upbringing.

Born on November 10, 1989, in Birkenhead on the Wirral Peninsula, Egerton moved to the Welsh island of Anglesey at a young age following his parents’ separation. Later, his family relocated to Aberystwyth on the west coast of Wales, where he spent most of his formative years.

Despite being born in England, Egerton has always identified as Welsh, and his love for his adopted homeland is a defining aspect of both his personal and professional life.

Growing up in rural Wales gave Egerton a sense of place and identity that he continues to carry with him. He has often spoken of his deep affection for the Welsh language, which he speaks to a conversational level, and his love of the rugged landscapes, coastlines, and tight-knit communities that shaped his youth. Wales wasn’t just a backdrop to his childhood; it was the soil in which his imagination took root.

His artistic ambitions began to blossom during his teenage years, when he joined a local youth theatre. It was there that he discovered his passion for performance, which led him to pursue formal training at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London, graduating in 2012.

Egerton’s early professional work included stage performances and small television roles, but his breakout came in 2014 when he was cast in Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman: The Secret Service. As Gary “Eggsy” Unwin, a street-smart young man from south London recruited into a secret spy organisation, Egerton brought a perfect blend of charm, grit, and emotional depth. The role catapulted him to global fame and earned him a BAFTA Rising Star nomination. He reprised the role in the 2017 sequel, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, solidifying his place as a major new talent in British cinema.

While the Kingsman franchise made him a household name, Egerton’s performance in the 2019 musical biopic Rocketman elevated him to critical acclaim. Playing the legendary Elton John, Egerton stunned audiences with his emotional range and musical talent – he performed all the songs himself, including iconic tracks like Your Song, Tiny Dancer and I’m Still Standing.

The performance won him a Golden Globe for Best Actor and widespread recognition for his fearless commitment to the role. Elton John himself publicly praised Egerton, describing his performance as “extraordinary” and his friendship with the actor as one of the most rewarding outcomes of the film.

Beyond the major blockbusters, Egerton has demonstrated remarkable versatility. In 2016, he starred in Eddie the Eagle, playing the real-life British ski jumper Michael “Eddie” Edwards. The film was a crowd-pleasing underdog story, and Egerton’s endearing performance captured the spirit of a man who refused to give up in the face of adversity – something that mirrored Egerton’s own commitment to authenticity and heart in his work.

He also lent his voice to the hit animated musical Sing and its sequel, proving equally at ease in family entertainment as he is in high-octane action or emotionally demanding drama.

In 2022, Egerton took a darker turn in Black Bird, a limited series on Apple TV+ in which he played Jimmy Keene, a convicted drug dealer coerced into coaxing a confession out of a suspected serial killer. The role, based on a true story, demonstrated Egerton’s deepening dramatic range and earned him widespread acclaim, including a Primetime Emmy nomination. It marked a new chapter in his career, showing that he was not just a leading man but a serious actor with staying power.

Throughout his ascent, Egerton has remained resolutely grounded and openly proud of his Welsh identity. He frequently speaks about his connection to Wales in interviews and public appearances, and he has used his platform to highlight Welsh talent and culture.

He has appeared on Welsh-language media, supported Welsh charities, and continues to maintain strong ties with his roots in Aberystwyth.

Despite the international success, there is nothing manufactured about Egerton’s charm – he brings with him the warmth, humility and quiet strength that so often characterise the people of Wales.

In recent years, he has expressed an interest in returning to theatre, having previously made his West End debut in a 2022 production of Cock at London’s Ambassadors Theatre.

He has also been linked to a variety of film and television projects, all of which suggest that his trajectory is far from plateauing. Whether on screen, stage, or behind a microphone, Egerton’s commitment to storytelling, his emotional honesty, and his dedication to his craft continue to set him apart.
