Penarth Regatta

THE Penarth Regatta is a long-standing seaside tradition dating back to 1880, when the newly-formed Penarth Boat Club organised its first ‘Amateur Aquatic Sports’ on the town’s beach.
Early events featured sailing, rowing, canoeing, swimming, and even novelty races, drawing large crowds to the seafront.
By the 1890s, the regatta had become a popular fixture, coinciding with the rise of the pier and Esplanade as leisure destinations.
The club was renamed Penarth Yacht Club in 1895, reflecting its expanding sailing activities, while rowing remained central to the regatta’s programme.
In 1926, the rowing section gained its own identity as Penarth Rowing Club, allowing closer ties to the Amateur Rowing Association.

Through the 20th Century the regatta grew into a highlight of Penarth’s social calendar, balancing serious competition with community celebration.
Today, the annual September regatta continues to thrive, uniting sailors and rowers of all ages in a lively showcase of Penarth’s maritime heritage.
