Demolition men called in as ‘gruesome’ seaside eyesore flops

IN 1968, the Vale of Glamorgan Council constructed a multi-storey car park on Penarth’s seafront, incorporating an amusement arcade and a café.
Intended to modernize the area and boost tourism, the structure was criticized for its stark, brutalist design – one local report describing it as ‘gruesome’ – that clashed with the town’s Victorian architecture.
Despite its facilities, the development failed to attract sufficient visitors and was financially unviable.
After years of underuse and public disapproval, the building was demolished in 2002, paving the way for more sympathetic regeneration efforts along the Esplanade.
