Brecon

BRECON is a handsome market town in Powys that sits where the Rivers Usk and Honddu meet, with the peaks of Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) rising like a natural amphitheatre around it.

At its heart is Brecon Cathedral, an austere Norman priory turned place of quiet contemplation, set in leafy grounds with a friendly tearoom and the sort of stillness that invites you to linger.

The streets that run down from it are a pleasing mix of Georgian facades and Victorian shopfronts, independent boutiques rubbing shoulders with bookshops, cosy cafés and timeworn pubs pouring local ales. On market days the old hall hums with Welsh cheeses, farm produce and snippets of conversation in both English and Cymraeg.

Brecon is a town that looks outwards to the hills. Pen y Fan, the highest summit in southern Britain, feels almost on the doorstep, and trailheads for family rambles and big-day hikes are never far away.

Cyclists know Brecon as the start of the Taff Trail to Cardiff, while the tree-lined Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal offers slow travel by towpath or narrowboat, with kingfishers as occasional companions. When evening falls, the national park’s celebrated dark skies make this one of the best places in the UK for stargazing.

Culture runs deep here too. The much-loved Brecon Jazz Festival brings brass, swing and improvisation to town each summer, filling intimate venues and spilling onto the streets.

Year-round, the Regimental Museum of The Royal Welsh tells compelling stories of soldiers and campaigns, while small galleries champion local makers in pottery, textiles and landscape painting.

Good food is part of the appeal: expect hearty Welsh lamb, Breconshire venison, local trout and indulgent cakes to refuel after a day outdoors.

Whether you come for a weekend of walking, a canal-side amble with ice cream in hand, or simply to wander pretty lanes and discover your new favourite café, Brecon makes it delightfully easy to slow down and breathe.
