St Fagans National Museum of History
ONE of Wales’s most captivating cultural experiences, St Fagans National Museum of History is an open-air museum set in the grounds of St Fagans Castle just outside Cardiff that explores how everyday Welsh people have lived, worked and made home across millennia.
More than 50 authentically reconstructed buildings sit across a beautiful parkland estate, from Iron Age roundhouses to medieval farmsteads, a Victorian school, chapel and pub, and complete mid-20th-Century shops moved here stone-by-stone from the communities they originally served.
Rather than presenting history behind glass, St Fagans invites you into it: cottage hearths are lit, looms clatter, flour is milled, and craftspeople still practise traditional skills in situ — giving the place a living, working, sensory dimension.
The permanent galleries and recorded oral histories layer in context, adding the voices and objects of real people to the architecture.
Free to enter, and constantly evolving as new buildings and stories are added, St Fagans is both a time-travelling village and a profoundly Welsh act of cultural preservation, connecting visitors with the texture of everyday life in Wales across 200,000 years — not as an abstract timeline, but as a place you can literally walk around.
