Proud of its association with Max Boyce, one of Wales’s best and most-loved celebrity entertainers. Max is a past captain of the club and is a long-serving ‘hands on’ president. His very popular competition, The Max Boyce Classic, held at Glynneath, has attracted a host of well-known celebrities and sports personalities down the years. “You may have played St Mellion’s, the course that Jack built. But have you played ‘Royal Glynneath’, the course that God built?”, asks Max. It lies within the Brecon Beacons National Park – an area of outstanding natural beauty – and is frequently visited by golfers from all over the UK, many of whom head to Wales for a short break and call in on the way to or from their destination.

NEATH GOLF CLUB
If you are looking for a change from playing the seaside courses when visiting the West Glamorgan area, then Neath Golf Club is an excellent place to visit. In direct contrast to Swansea’s great linkland clubs, the course at Neath sits majestically atop a high hill at Cadoxton and two miles from the bustling old town of Neath. Founded in 1934, the then committee members had the sense to commission a top quality golfer in the shape of Open champion James Braid to lay out the course from difficult terrain, and he most certainly came up trumps by creating a demanding course. The vistas of the Vale of Neath and the outstanding countryside beyond are something very special. Braid once wrote of the views: ” I must say the views from every part of this course are truly magnificent”. Henry Cotton also wrote a glowing tribute to the course when he penned a letter to a close friend: “I’ve travelled the entire golfing world but never before seen such golfing beauty as at Neath”.

SWANSEA BAY GOLF CLUB, NEATH
This historic and prestigious club was founded in 1892 and constructed on the estate then owned by the Earl of Jersey. A demanding par-72, 6,447-yard links course with tight lies and undulating fairways and numerous natural dunes to contend with. The 18th green that sits proud at the front of the clubhouse makes its presence felt by its colossal length of 60 yards. Holes 9 and 11 run parallel with the river Neath, with the 9th displaying a striking tidal inlet known as The Gulch, which is yet another unique and natural feature of this course.
