Cowbridge

COWBRIDGE is the kind of small Welsh town that makes you slow down, look up and wander. Set in the Vale of Glamorgan, it balances countryside calm with a confident, contemporary high street, long celebrated for its independents, cafés and places to linger over something delicious.

Even the lifestyle Press has noticed, with Cowbridge regularly singled out as one of the loveliest corners of south-east Wales.

Beneath the polish there’s real depth. The town plan still follows its medieval footprint, and you can trace the old line of the walls as you stroll; the surviving South Gate is a rare and evocative reminder that Cowbridge was once a walled town – one of very few in Wales.

Georgian facades and handsome town houses front the main street, hinting at centuries of trade along this old route between Cardiff and the west.

Tucked just off the high street, the walled Cowbridge Physic Garden offers a quiet pause. Planted in the spirit of an 18th-Century apothecary’s garden, it’s a compact, beautifully kept space where medicinal and culinary plants are ordered with pleasing symmetry behind Old Hall’s walls. Slip in for 10 minutes and you’ll likely stay for 30.

Food is a year-round theme here. The town’s long-running Food and Drink Festival brings the lanes alive each late-spring bank holiday with producers, tastings and chef demos, while Saturdays feel like market day should, thanks to the weekly farmers’ market brimming with local Welsh produce.

It’s easy to treat Cowbridge as a base for exploring the Vale’s vineyards, country pubs and the wild edges of the Glamorgan Heritage Coast, but many visitors find themselves happily orbiting the high street all day.

Whether you come for boutique browsing and coffee, old stones and stories, or a garden that smells of rosemary and history, Cowbridge rewards curiosity. It’s compact, characterful and quietly confident – a small town with a big sense of taste.
