AN impressive indoor sports arena, more used to hosting elite athletes, became temporary home to an array of film and television characters for one weekend in April 2026 as convention-goers came from far and wide to celebrate their pop culture heroes.
Saturday, April 11, saw the National Indoor Athletics Centre (NIAC), on the Cyncoed campus of Cardiff Met University, transformed into a playground for cosplayers, dressed to the nines as lookalikes from their favourite fandoms.
Special guests, such as Red Dwarf’s Chris Barrie and the exuberant Brian Blessed, gave talks, signed autographs and posed for pictures with fans, while traders galore plied their wares, offering merchandise covering all aspects of pop culture.
Sunday saw an even greater number of traders descend upon the NIAC for an event double-header of the LEGO-inspired Brick Festival and Cardiff Gaming Market.

Cardiff Brick Festival came to town on Sunday, when LEGO enthusiasts from all over south Wales headed to the National Indoor Athletics Centre at Cardiff Met’s Cyncoed campus. LEGO sets old and new, large and small, were available to purchase, alongside tables and tables of awesome LEGO displays, from Pokemon to Star Trek, plus loads of hands-on activities for adults and kids alike.
